The comparison game
And then there is the comparison game. We are ridiculously good at this. “If I was just as thin as her”, “If I was only as pretty as she was” “If my kids behaved as good as her kids,” “If I only had a job like hers” or ”I didn’t have to work like her”
WE ARE MASTERS AT COMPARING!!
It is such an effective tool for the enemy to keep us comparing with one another. Being jealous of what “they have” or “how they look.”
No where in God’s word will you find a scripture that encourages us to compare ourselves to each other. No where will you find in scripture that you are rewarded for this behavior. In fact, this is what you will find about how God feels about our comparing (envy).
There is no “peace” in comparing. No contentment. And there is not a grateful heart when we are comparing.
There is no “joy” when we are comparing!! We rob ourselves of joy every time we compare. Comparison is a joy thief!
And like the scripture says “It’s meaningless, a chasing after the wind”. What can be accomplished of chasing the wind?
It reminds me of that old saying “worry is like a rocking chair it gives you something to do but doesn’t get you anywhere!”
We don’t get anywhere when we compare. In fact, we cause ourselves a lot of heart ache and pain.
We spend our lives observing, comparing & judging. And when we think we don’t measure up we work!! We work hard to try & measure up!! And that is the definition of discontentment. And this grieves the heart of God!
“I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any & every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.” Phil 4:12
